Slip-up… Proposal to exchange Sansal for the skulls of Algerian resistance fighters!

A slip-up by a French journalist on a public platform, France Inter, a French international radio station, sparked a political and media controversy linked to the memory file, which is stuck in the quagmire of a political and diplomatic crisis between Algeria and Paris, escalating day by day for nearly a year.
This slip-up involved a proposal to exchange about nine thousand (9000) skulls of Algerian resistance fighters, inhumanely displayed in the “Museum of Man” in the French capital, Paris, for over a century, for the release of the Franco-Algerian writer, Boualem Sansal, who is serving a five-year prison sentence in Kolea prison, west of the capital, due to serious actions that affected the territorial integrity of the country.
The author of this “scandalous” proposal, as described by former minister and diplomat Abdelaziz Rehabi, is the French journalist of Lebanese origin, Léa Salamé, during her interview with the writer Xavier Leclerc, who in turn revealed more horrific details of events committed by the French occupation army in Algeria since the early years of brutal French colonization.
The former Minister of Communication wrote on his “X” account, formerly “Twitter”: “A journalist proposes to exchange nine thousand skulls of Algerian resistance fighters in the Museum of Man in Paris, for the release of Sansal.. This is a scandal.” The issue of retrieving the skulls of Algerian resistance fighters is one of the most prominent demands continuously raised by Algeria to the Algerian authorities, and so far, only about 20 skulls were recovered in 2020.
Xavier Leclerc’s interview with France Inter, which came on the occasion of the publication of his book titled “Bread of the French,” contained new details about the atrocities of the French occupation army against Algerians, where he spoke about the colonial army in the nineteenth century mixing human bones of Algerians and animals inside large ovens to whiten molasses for making sugar beet. Prince Abdelkader had condemned this practice, which amounted to cannibalism.
The issue of the imprisonment of the Franco-Algerian writer, Boualem Sansal, has become an obsession for the French, despite the fact that he committed a crime punishable by law and has received his punishment. This obsession has reached the point of discussing the possibility of exchanging him for the skulls of Algerian resistance fighters, on a French media platform funded by the government treasury, because “France Inter” is a public media institution.
The Algerian judiciary is expected to rule on Boualem Sansal’s case at the appeal hearing scheduled for the 24th of next month, at the Algiers Judicial Council. This hearing is eagerly awaited by the French side, as the tone of officials has changed when commenting on this case, from demanding his release to appealing to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to make a humanitarian gesture towards him.
In contrast, the French authorities are entrenched behind what they say is the legal arsenal that prevents the handover of the skulls of Algerian resistance fighters, and they stipulate, in exchange for its implementation, a review of some related laws, which has kept these displayed in the Museum of Man in Paris, in a scene where the highest meanings of human dignity were absent from the former colonizer.
